What is coronavirus?
Coronavirus is responsible for a variety of infections including, to some extent, the common cold. The virus is also responsible for SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome). It can affect your respiratory system. Infections with the virus often occur in winter. It can be transmitted from person to person after contact with contaminated droplets from sneezing and coughing and by touching contaminated objects. It is highly contagious and reinfections may occur. A person with a weakened immune system is less able to fight the infection.
Symptoms of the virus include fatigue, scratchy throat, nasal congestion and runny nose. In more serious infection, a person can develop fever, chills, acute cough, headache, dizziness, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties.
How is coronavirus detected and diagnosed?
A full physical examination is performed including chest X rays, complete review of symptoms and blood tests. Other specific tests may be required for SARS.
What are the conventional treatments for coronavirus?
There is no specific treatment for coronavirus. If there is no fever, symptoms can be treated with over-the-counter medications and plenty of fluids and rest. If symptoms worsen and fever develops, urgent medical attention is needed. Patients may be prescribed with antibiotics, antiviral medications and steroids to decrease lung inflammation. In severe cases, the patient may need life support and hospitalisation.
Can coronavirus be prevented?
The best prevention against coronavirus infection is to avoid contact with infected persons. Handwashing or cleaning hands with a sanitiser is an important part of infection control. Coughing or sneezing should be done into the arm to minimise droplets and airborne particles. Individuals should not share food, drinks and utensils. Surfaces at home that are frequently touched should be cleaned with disinfectant.
Can coronavirus be treated with homeopathy?
There is currently no specific homeopathic treatment for coronavirus. Because homeopathy works by addressing the symptoms of a disease, certain homeopathic remedies used in cases of flu or common cold may provide relief of respiratory symptoms caused by the virus. Homeopaths may prescribe any one or a combination of the following remedies according to individual symptom presentation: Aconite, Arsenicum Album, Gelsemium, Chelidonium, Influenzinum, Bacillinum, Diphtherinum, Arnica, Natrum Sulph.
