How Are Homeopathic Remedies Made?

The remedies used in homeopathy are derived from many sources. The majority are prepared from plants, but many minerals are also used. A few remedies are made from insects and animals and other toxic substances.

A remedy is prepared by dissolving a tincture of the original material usually in alcohol. The next step is to take one drop of the tincture and add it to 9 drops of alcohol. It is then succussed or shaken a specific number of times. This produces the first dilution or potency of 1X. The X stands for the decimal scale.

To get the next potency, one drop is taken from the 1X dilution and added to a further 9 drops of alcohol and shaken. This gives the 2X potency. If this method is repeated another four times, it results in the 6X potency.

If instead of 9 drops, 99 drops of alcohol are used, this is referred to as the centesimal scale. The first dilution of a centesimal potency is written as 1C. If the process of diluting and shaking is repeated thirty times, it results in the 30C potency. The potency 1000C is sometimes written as 1M, the potency 10 000 is written as 10M, and 100 000 is written as CM.

Chemically, progressive dilution soon results in not one single molecule of the original substance remaining in the remedy. One might expect that at this point the remedy would have no effect, yet the opposite seemed to be true – remedies subjected to repeated dilution and succussion were more potent than the original tinctures from which they have been prepared.

How Are Homeopathic Remedies Tested?

Almost all homeopathic remedies have been “proved” or tested, although practitioners gain additional knowledge of them from clinical experience. In a proving, a remedy is tested on a group of healthy people over some time, until they develop symptoms.

Neither the supervisor nor the group should know what remedy they are proving. This is a double-blind study, conducted on scientific principles. The symptoms that the participants or provers develop are recorded until a complete symptom picture is obtained.

Remedy pictures are detailed in large volumes called the Materia Medica. Now we know what the remedy can cure.

How does a homeopath choose the right remedy?

If a homeopath gets the homeopathic remedy right, it works quickly – especially in acute illnesses that come on suddenly, such as infections. Choosing the right remedy involves carefully distinguishing between different remedy pictures.

Symptoms are the key to selecting an appropriate homeopathic remedy because they show exactly how the body is trying to restore the balance. Clues to the right remedy are found in details such as the location and type of inflammation (e.g. whether in the throat, chest, or ears), or the kind of discharge produced (irritating mucous, creamy, or thick and yellow-green).

The conditions that trigger off a particular infection (such as the damp, stress, or emotions) show the circumstances which lower our resistance to illness.
We respond in different ways, even if we are struggling with the same infection. Our unique responses form a pattern that corresponds to a picture of a homeopathic remedy.

To find this pattern, a homeopath will observe our preferences when ill – for example, what we want to drink, at what temperature we feel most comfortable, and whether we need fresh air. Some of us feel hot and feverish, while others become chilly and anxious. Most of us don’t like to use up much-needed energy digesting food; some don’t even want to drink. We may feel oversensitive to cold, but our nose might be less blocked in the open air.

The art of choosing homeopathic remedies successfully depends on the homeopath’s ability to recognise the subtle ways we change when coping with illness.
Our emotional state provides important clues for choosing the right remedy.

Homeopaths remember symptoms pictures for each remedy as people. Do we get emotional or weepy? Do we worry a lot about being ill and need lots of reassurance? Or can we not bear to be fussed over and get grumpy and irritable? Each of these emotional states provides clues and help in the selection of a unique remedy for us.

Are homeopathic remedies safe?

  • You can rest assured that most homeopathic remedies are safe, natural and non-toxic.
  • Most homeopathic remedies (also called homeopathic medicines, homeopathic preparations) are included in the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG) and prepared by reputable homeopathic pharmacies.
  • Because homeopathic medicines are diluted to the point that no remaining molecule of the original substance is left, they are considered low-risk to consumers. Therefore, you do not need to worry about side effects.
  • Homeopathic remedies are made from the whole part, not just one or two active ingredients, of natural substances such as plants, animals and minerals. These natural substances have been tried and tested on humans for thousands of years over many generations.
